Don’t like cooking?
Let me ask you this: How do you feel in your kitchen?
I know you (and I) are spending lots more time at home right now so it’s the perfect time to get your kitchen decluttered and organized. Creating a kitchen environment that you feel comfortable in — a kitchen you actually look forward to spending time in — increases your desire to spend time in it. So, while you have some time – let’s organize, declutter, and detox your kitchen.
An organized and clutter-free kitchen will allow you to also keep your meals organized.
Think about it this way…
Maybe your mama wasn’t a cook (maybe NO ONE you grew up with was a cook) and you’re instantly intimidated by the kitchen…so you assume you simply can’t do it.
Or, maybe you love to cook but since you’ve had kids, there is NO TIME for it in your routine– from shopping, prep, cooking, clean up, to planning the next round…all the things.
It’s time to eliminate some of the negative thoughts you might have about this important room in your house.
Here are my top tips to help you detox and declutter your kitchen.
Tip one: Less is more
(Especially true in your kitchen).
If you’re overwhelmed by all the kitchen things (I’m looking at you air fryer, Instant Pot, Crockpot — who are all taking up premium space in my cabinet), take all the stuff OUT and assess. Ask yourself: “Do I already have something that can do what this does?”. For example, do you really need that fancy pizza cutter, or will a chef’s knife (or solid pair of kitchen scissors) do the same job?
Tip two: Organize what’s left.
Make a donation pile of things you know you aren’t using (if you’re on the fence, put in a box and leave it in the garage or basement — if you haven’t gone to dig it out for any reason in 3 or 6 months, then donate it). Now, make sure what you have left is serving you and your kitchen needs.
Tip three: Make sure you have the necessities.

Here’s my Top-10 List of Mel’s MUST HAVE kitchen tools:
- A sharp, good quality chef’s knife (need one? try looking in places like TJ Maxx, Ross, etc.).
- A good cutting board (could be wood or thick plastic — get rid of it after it gets really scored up from knife/cutting marks over time because those deep grooves can harbor bacteria).
- All-purpose mixing bowls that can ALSO double for storage (these are my faves).
- Mason jars and other glass storage containers (these are my faves).
- Dutch oven (keep your eye out in a discount store like TJs).
- Stainless-steel, cast-iron and/or ceramic saute pan.
- Bakeware dishes made either from ceramic, stoneware, enamel-covered cast iron or tempered glass.
- High-speed blender (worth purchasing a high-quality one; next to my husband, this is something I CANNOT live without, lol).
- Mixer (budget-friendly hand-held works just as well as the all-out kitchen stand mixer).
- Tongs!
